Jeffersonville, IN – Residents in Southeast Indiana are being urged to take precautions today as the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued an Air Quality Action Day for Monday, September 15, 2025. The advisory is specific to the region’s elevated levels of ground-level ozone, also known as smog.

According to IDEM, ozone concentrations are expected to reach levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, which include children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. Officials warn that outdoor activity, particularly in the afternoon and early evening, may pose health risks.

The affected area includes cities such as Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Madison in Clark and Jefferson counties, as well as surrounding communities in the southeast corner of the state. Elevated ozone levels typically form on hot, sunny days when vehicle emissions and industrial pollutants react in the atmosphere.

Residents are encouraged to reduce their exposure by limiting strenuous outdoor activity, staying indoors when possible, and using air conditioning if available. IDEM also recommends lowering emissions by avoiding unnecessary vehicle trips, refueling cars in the evening, and conserving energy at home.

Air quality conditions can change quickly throughout the day. Current readings and forecasts are available at SmogWatch.IN.gov.
