CHARLESTON, S.C. – The first major cold snap of the season will grip southeast Georgia and South Carolina’s Lowcountry Monday night into early Tuesday, as temperatures plunge into the 20s and wind chills drop into the upper teens. The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory for much of the inland and coastal plain from 9 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The coldest readings are expected inland, where overnight lows fall into the mid and upper 20s, while areas closer to the coast will hover near freezing. Winds of 10–15 mph will combine with the cold air to produce wind chills between 18 and 25 degrees for several hours before sunrise Tuesday.

Officials warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage crops and landscaping, and exposed outdoor pipes may freeze if left unprotected. Residents are urged to cover or drain outdoor plumbing, bring pets indoors, and bundle up if heading outside early Tuesday.

This Arctic air mass will mark the first widespread freeze of the fall season for areas including Savannah, Statesboro, Walterboro, Summerville, and Allendale. Conditions will improve by late morning Tuesday as sunshine warms temperatures into the 50s.
