Charleston, S.C. – Another round of dangerously dry air and gusty afternoon breezes will create elevated fire danger across the South Carolina Lowcountry and parts of southeast Georgia today. The National Weather Service warns that critically low humidity and dry vegetation could allow any outdoor fire to spread rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service office in Charleston, relative humidity will drop to 20–30% this afternoon, with west winds of 5–15 mph. Areas along and west of I-95—including Walterboro, Summerville, and Savannah’s inland counties—are most at risk for near-critical fire weather. Officials urge residents to delay any outdoor burning and check with local burn permit authorities before lighting fires.

Forestry agencies across both states remain on alert for quick ignition and spread in pine stands and grasslands, especially during the peak heating hours from noon to 6 p.m. The combination of low fuel moisture and dry soil follows several days of sunshine and light rainfall deficits, compounding the fire potential.

Conditions are expected to remain dry again Thursday before a gradual rise in humidity arrives late week, bringing some relief by the weekend.
