Savannah, Ga. – Heavy bands of thunderstorms are bringing torrential rain to Chatham County, Georgia, and Jasper County, South Carolina, prompting a flash flood warning through 4 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service says up to 3 inches of rain could fall in a matter of hours, triggering dangerous flooding across the Savannah metro area.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, radar indicated the most intense rainfall is just offshore and moving inland. Areas from Downtown Savannah to Pooler, Tybee Island, and Bluffton may see rapid water accumulation on streets, underpasses, and low-lying areas. Interstates 16, 95, and 516 could see lane closures or delays if water overtakes roadways.

Residents are urged to avoid travel overnight, as flooded roads can be difficult to spot in the dark. Emergency officials warn that most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles — drivers should turn around rather than attempt to cross high water.

Rain is expected to ease toward daybreak, but additional showers could keep water levels elevated into the morning commute.
