Savannah, Ga. – Extreme heat will grip southeast Georgia and parts of the South Carolina Lowcountry Thursday, with a heat index climbing to between 106 and 111 degrees through the evening. Residents in Savannah, Beaufort, Hilton Head, and surrounding areas are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a wide swath of coastal and inland counties, including Effingham, Bryan, Chatham, Long, Liberty, McIntosh, Jasper, and Beaufort. Forecasters say scattered afternoon thunderstorms could bring some cooling relief, particularly near the Savannah River and northward into the Lowcountry.

Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, staying indoors with air conditioning, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Outdoor workers should take frequent shaded breaks. Heat stroke remains a serious risk — anyone experiencing symptoms such as confusion, fainting, or rapid heartbeat should seek emergency help immediately.

Conditions are expected to ease slightly tonight as storms develop, but heat and humidity will remain high heading into the weekend.
