Pueblo, Colorado – Some of the coldest air of the season is poised to surge into southern Colorado late this week, bringing a high likelihood of prolonged sub-freezing temperatures and potentially dangerous morning lows across the plains Friday and Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, confidence is high that Friday and Saturday will feature well below normal temperatures across the southeast Colorado plains. There is a 70 to 90 percent chance that daytime highs remain below freezing both days, with a 30 to 50 percent chance highs struggle to reach 20 degrees on Saturday. Overnight lows are expected to be especially cold, with a 60 to 70 percent chance of temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Cities including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Lamar, La Junta, and Trinidad are all expected to see hard freezes, with the coldest conditions likely during the early morning hours. Prolonged cold could stress exposed pipes, livestock, and sensitive infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
Light snow is also possible Friday into Saturday, though forecasters stress there is considerable uncertainty regarding snowfall amounts and coverage. Any snow combined with the cold could create slick travel conditions on I-25, Highway 50, and Highway 287.
Residents are urged to prepare now for dangerous cold, limit outdoor exposure, protect pipes and pets, and closely monitor updates. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases in snow potential and temperature extremes.
