Pueblo, Colorado – Strong storms could slam the far southeast Colorado plains between 2 and 8 p.m. today, bringing the risk of giant hail, 60+ mph wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the marginal risk zone covers areas including Springfield, Lamar, and La Junta, with storms expected to develop this afternoon. Any storms that form may produce hail larger than two inches in diameter and damaging wind capable of toppling trees or power lines.
Drivers along US-287 and US-50 should monitor conditions closely and avoid travel if possible during peak storm hours. Emergency managers in Baca and Prowers counties are urging residents to prepare for sudden warnings and shelter needs. Storms may develop rapidly with little lead time.
Residents should charge phones, secure outdoor items, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or trusted alerts through the evening.
Conditions should improve after 8 p.m., but more weather watches could be issued later this week.
