Pueblo, Colorado – Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected Friday across southeastern Colorado, prompting a Red Flag Warning for Kiowa and Prowers Counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, north winds gusting between 40 and 60 mph combined with relative humidity near 15% will create a high risk for fast-moving wildfires. Any fire that starts could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., covering the period of strongest winds and lowest humidity. Forecast maps show critically dry air across the far southeastern plains, including areas near Eads, Lamar, and surrounding rural communities.

Officials stress that outdoor burning and activities that could generate sparks should be postponed until conditions improve. Even common actions such as parking vehicles on dry grass, dragging trailer chains, or using power equipment can ignite fires under these conditions.

The National Weather Service also notes that fire behavior may become extreme during peak wind gusts Friday afternoon, especially in open grassland areas where fuels are dry and continuous.

Residents and travelers in the warned areas are urged to remain vigilant, report smoke immediately, and follow all local fire restrictions. Conditions are expected to ease later Friday evening as winds weaken and humidity recovers.
