Juneau, AK – The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a High Wind Warning for southern Southeast Alaska, including Prince of Wales Island, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, and Annette Island, effective from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday (AKDT).
Forecasters warn that southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected across coastal communities such as Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Ketchikan, and Metlakatla. Higher elevations—especially those above 1,000 feet—could experience gusts exceeding 70 mph overnight.
According to the NWS, the strongest winds will likely impact the southwestern portion of Prince of Wales Island, where exposure to open marine channels will amplify gusts. The agency warns that travel could become difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and power outages or property damage are possible due to falling branches or debris.
Residents are urged to secure boats, outdoor furniture, and any loose items before winds strengthen this evening. The Weather Service also encourages the public to report storm damage or wind impacts at weather.gov/Juneau/StormReports.
Conditions should begin to improve after 4 a.m. Wednesday as the storm system moves eastward and winds gradually diminish.
