Hondo, Texas – A sharp overnight temperature drop is expected across south-central Texas, putting crops, sensitive plants, and unprotected plumbing at risk as freezing conditions develop before sunrise Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday for Medina, Frio, Atascosa, Wilson, and Karnes counties. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 30 degrees, cold enough to cause frost and freeze damage in exposed areas.
Communities including Hondo, Pearsall, Pleasanton, Floresville, and Karnes City are most vulnerable during the pre-dawn hours, when temperatures typically bottom out. Rural areas and low-lying spots may see freezing conditions linger the longest, increasing the threat to winter vegetables, citrus, and early spring plantings. Unprotected outdoor pipes and irrigation systems could also be damaged if precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to cover tender plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and wrap exposed plumbing. Pet owners should also ensure animals have access to adequate warmth overnight.
Temperatures are expected to rebound quickly after sunrise Wednesday, ending the freeze threat by mid-morning. While no additional freeze warnings are currently posted, officials advise staying alert for further cold weather headlines if clear skies and calm winds persist later this week.
