Chicago, IL — Showers are expected to develop late Friday afternoon and intensify into the evening across northeast Illinois, with the heaviest rainfall projected south of Interstate 80.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, areas including Kankakee, Pontiac, and Paxton could receive over 1 inch of rain, with isolated pockets nearing 2 inches. The rain is expected to continue overnight into early Saturday, increasing the risk of flooding in fields, creeks, and ditches. The green-shaded zone on weather maps highlights regions most likely to be impacted.

Residents in the south suburban and rural regions are advised to monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roadways. Rapid runoff from saturated soils may lead to rises in rivers and stream levels. Rain chances decrease by Saturday, though lingering showers could persist east of I-55.

Sunday will bring cooler temperatures near Lake Michigan with highs in the low 40s. A fast-moving system on Monday may reintroduce rain and even snow flurries as temperatures fall into the upper 30s.

Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed during downpours and ensure drains and gutters are clear to reduce localized flooding. Stay updated via weather.gov/chicago.
