South Portland, ME – Drivers traveling through South Portland should expect delays Monday after a box truck overturned on Interstate 295, temporarily blocking the southbound lanes and scattering cargo across the roadway.
According to the Maine State Police, the crash happened at approximately 4 a.m. Monday near mile marker 2 on southbound I-295. Troopers responded to reports of a rollover involving a box truck.
The preliminary investigation found that the truck, driven by 40-year-old Jose Cancel of Newport, Rhode Island, was traveling northbound when the driver allegedly swerved to avoid deer in the roadway. Investigators say the truck overcorrected, struck the median guardrail, overturned, and came to rest blocking the southbound travel lanes.
Authorities said Cancel was not injured in the crash.
The truck was transporting household goods, which spilled across the highway following the rollover. Crews worked to clear the debris and remove the overturned vehicle.
As of the latest update, one southbound lane has reopened, but motorists should continue to expect slower traffic while cleanup operations continue. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed, remain alert for emergency personnel, and consider allowing extra travel time through the area.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
