Lubbock, TX – Rain chances are set to return to the South Plains and Caprock tonight, with showers developing this evening and continuing through the overnight hours, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.
According to the NWS Lubbock office, precipitation is expected to move from west to east across the region beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into early Thursday morning. The highest rain chances are forecast after midnight, with a thunderstorm or two possible, mainly off the Caprock.
Forecasters say rainfall totals are expected to be light, as the weather system responsible for the rain is moving quickly through the area. While most locations will see only brief showers, isolated heavier downpours cannot be ruled out if a stronger storm develops overnight.
The severe weather threat remains low, and widespread storms are not expected. However, residents may hear occasional thunder, particularly in areas east of Lubbock toward the Rolling Plains during the early morning hours Thursday.
Timing-wise, showers are most likely between 7 p.m. and midnight across western portions of the South Plains, then shift eastward between midnight and 7 a.m. Thursday. Morning commuters could encounter wet roads, though significant travel impacts are not anticipated.
Weather officials recommend staying aware of changing conditions overnight, especially for those traveling late or early Thursday morning. Updates will be issued if rain coverage or storm intensity changes.
