South Lake Tahoe, CA – Travel across the Lake Tahoe region could become extremely hazardous early next week as a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect from 10 p.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Wednesday, impacting major mountain routes including U.S. Highway 50, Interstate 80, and Highway 89.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, widespread snowfall will overspread the Tahoe Basin beginning late Monday night. Forecasters expect 10 to 18 inches of snow above 7,000 feet, while Lake Tahoe–level communities may see 4 to 6 inches. Areas along and west of Highway 89 could receive 6 to 12 inches, increasing the risk of road closures and chain controls.

Conditions are expected to worsen Tuesday into Tuesday evening, when snowfall intensity peaks. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are forecast around the lake, with gusts reaching 70 mph along the Sierra crest, producing blowing snow, whiteout conditions, and falling tree branches. Travel during this period could be very difficult to impossible, especially along US-50 over Echo Summit and I-80 near Donner Pass.

In addition to roadway hazards, hazardous conditions are expected on Lake Tahoe itself. Wave heights of 1 to 3 feet are forecast, prompting officials to urge small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards to remain off the water until conditions improve.

Drivers are encouraged to delay non-essential travel, carry emergency supplies, and check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Even brief travel disruptions could quickly escalate due to heavy snow and high winds.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Wednesday as snowfall tapers.
