Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers and evening commuters could face rapidly deteriorating conditions today as thunderstorms strengthen between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., bringing damaging winds and heavy rain across eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, widespread showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon, with 60% to 80% coverage expected. A few storms could turn severe, producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail near 1 inch in diameter, especially near and south of the I-78 corridor.
Cities including Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading, and Trenton may see scattered storms early, followed by a more organized cluster moving through during the evening hours. Localized downpours could reduce visibility to under a mile and lead to brief street flooding, particularly in urban and low-lying areas.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roadways, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Storms may linger into the overnight hours, and additional updates or advisories could be issued as conditions evolve.
