Philadelphia, PA – A widespread freeze is set to hit the region within hours tonight, with temperatures plunging into the 20s and threatening plants, pipes, and early-season crops before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Freeze Warning is in effect overnight into early Wednesday morning, with lows expected to fall between 20°F and 32°F across eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The coldest readings, near 20°F, are expected in the Poconos, while Philadelphia, Trenton, and Wilmington drop into the upper 20s to low 30s.
Northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph today, will ease tonight, allowing temperatures to fall rapidly under clear skies. Major corridors including I-95, I-76, and the New Jersey Turnpike are not expected to see major travel impacts, but isolated slick spots cannot be ruled out in colder inland areas.
Sensitive vegetation faces the greatest risk, especially in suburban and rural locations. Residents should cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and take precautions with outdoor plumbing.
Another round of freezing temperatures and frost is likely Wednesday night into early Thursday, with additional alerts possible as cold conditions persist.
