Jacksonville, Florida – Wet snow is expected to affect parts of south Georgia late Sunday morning into early afternoon, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST Sunday for Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Coffee, and Jeff Davis counties.

Forecasters expect wet snow to develop late this morning, with snow accumulations up to one-half inch possible in Appling, Atkinson, and Bacon counties, mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces. Farther inland across Coffee and Jeff Davis counties, localized accumulations of one-half to one inch are possible on similar surfaces.

While widespread roadway accumulation is not expected, the National Weather Service warns that bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways may become slick, particularly during periods of steadier snowfall. Surface temperatures near freezing could allow snow to briefly stick in isolated spots.

Communities affected include Baxley, Alma, Pearson, Hazlehurst, Douglas, Axson, Willacoochee, and Plant Hatch. Even brief snowfall in south Georgia can lead to travel issues due to limited winter road treatment and unfamiliar driving conditions.

Snow is expected to taper off by early afternoon, but slick spots may linger for a short time afterward, especially in shaded or elevated locations. Visibility reductions may occur briefly during heavier bursts of snow.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution, particularly when crossing bridges or traveling on elevated roadways. Conditions may vary widely over short distances.

The Georgia Department of Transportation recommends checking current road conditions by dialing 511 before traveling. Additional updates may be issued if impacts increase.
