Douglas, Georgia – A surge of colder air moving into south Georgia could bring freezing temperatures late Monday night, raising concerns for crops, pets, and vulnerable residents across several counties by early Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday morning for Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Coffee, and Jeff Davis counties.

Forecasters say overnight temperatures could fall into the lower 30s, cold enough to produce frost or light freezing conditions in communities including Douglas, Baxley, Alma, Hazlehurst, Pearson, and Willacoochee.

The cold snap could damage early-season crops, gardens, and sensitive vegetation, especially in rural areas where temperatures tend to fall fastest before sunrise.

Residents are encouraged to protect tender plants, bring outdoor pets inside, and check on elderly neighbors or those without adequate heating. Homeless and vulnerable populations may also face increased risk during the cold conditions.

Temperatures should begin rising shortly after sunrise Tuesday, but additional cold weather alerts could follow if the colder air lingers across south Georgia.
