Valdosta, Ga. – Afternoon and evening thunderstorms could pack a stronger punch than usual across South Georgia today, bringing the threat of damaging winds and dangerous lightning from Albany to Valdosta.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms is in place for much of South Georgia through early evening. Cities including Moultrie, Tifton, and Bainbridge may see isolated wind gusts over 40 mph and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.

Localized power outages and tree limb damage are possible, especially in areas near the Florida-Georgia border. Motorists along U.S. Route 82 and I-75 should remain alert for sudden downpours and wind shifts. Outdoor plans or youth sports in cities like Thomasville and Cairo may need to be rescheduled.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings and seek shelter immediately if lightning is nearby. Safe places include sturdy buildings or hard-topped vehicles—not open fields or porches.

The storm risk should taper off later this evening, but additional thunderstorm chances return Friday and Saturday.
