Miami, FL – South Florida residents are being advised to prepare for periods of heavy rain and possible flooding through the end of the week. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami said Tuesday night that atmospheric conditions are coming together for widespread rainfall along the east coast metro area.

According to the NWS, showers and storms are expected to increase Wednesday, with the heaviest activity likely during the afternoon hours. While there will be breaks in rainfall, downpours over short periods of time could still lead to urban flooding.

Storm activity is forecast to persist along the immediate east coast through Thursday morning, with another round of storms developing inland by the afternoon. On Friday, the greatest chance of heavy rain will again target coastal areas, with afternoon storms bringing the highest flood risk.

Officials caution that while not every area will see constant rain, repeated rounds of storms over the next 72 hours could cause flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for commutes and avoid flooded roads when possible.

The NWS has categorized the impact as “moderate,” noting that heavy rain concentrated over metro areas like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach may create hazardous travel conditions.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert for updated advisories as the system moves through.
