Miami, Florida – Scattered thunderstorms packing heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to flare up across southwest and interior Florida this afternoon, with the most active window between 4 and 9 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, storms will concentrate around the Lake Okeechobee region and the southwest coast, including Naples, Immokalee, and LaBelle, where rain chances exceed 60%. Cities like Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach also face a 40–50% risk of storms moving inland.
These storms could produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail, and brief damaging wind gusts. Flooding is also possible in low-lying areas due to heavy downpours. Travel delays are likely on I-75 and US-27, especially during peak evening hours.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, secure outdoor items, and avoid open areas during lightning. If thunder roars, go indoors — especially near Lake Okeechobee, where storm intensity could peak.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by late evening, but additional rounds of thunderstorms are possible into the early week.
