Naples, FL – An unusual burst of cold air is impacting South Florida early Monday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Cold Weather Advisory for several inland and coastal communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, the advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. EST Monday, with wind chills dropping into the upper 20s and lower 30s across parts of Palm Beach, Collier, Hendry, and Glades counties.
Impacted areas include Inland Palm Beach County, Coastal and Inland Collier County, Hendry County, and Glades County, affecting communities such as Naples, Marco Island, Immokalee, Belle Glade, Clewiston, Wellington, Bonita Shores, Moore Haven, and Royal Palm Beach.
While these temperatures are not uncommon in northern states, meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure to these colder-than-normal conditions can still lead to hypothermia, particularly for individuals without adequate clothing or heating. The cold is especially dangerous for elderly residents, young children, and those experiencing homelessness.
Officials urge residents to dress in warm layers, wear hats and gloves if outdoors, and limit early-morning exposure to the cold. Pets should be brought indoors, and outdoor animals should have access to warm shelter. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and family members during the coldest hours.
Emergency officials remind residents to use space heaters safely and never operate grills or generators indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Temperatures are expected to rebound later Monday morning as sunshine returns, but officials say the early hours pose the greatest risk.
