A biting north wind sweeps through eastern South Dakota this morning, kicking up loose snow across open fields and farm roads. By midday, those gusts will strengthen sharply—setting the stage for a dangerous winter storm that could make travel nearly impossible in places by tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Wednesday morning for much of eastern South Dakota, including Minnehaha, Lincoln, Brookings, and Turner counties. Winds could reach 50 to 55 mph, creating blizzard-like whiteouts and drifting snow across rural routes and major corridors like I-29. Visibility may fall below ¼ mile, especially during the evening commute.

Meteorologists caution that conditions could deteriorate quickly after midday as falling and blowing snow combine with existing snowpack. Even short drives may become treacherous as slick spots develop and wind chills tumble toward single digits. Residents are urged to delay travel, secure outdoor items, and check on neighbors as temperatures dip through midweek.

By Thursday, the storm will pull east, but cold air lingers. Weekend lows could plunge below zero, with wind chills as low as –25°F. Another push of Arctic air is expected early next week, signaling the true start of winter across the Northern Plains and Midwest.
