Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Winds topping 55 mph are whipping across eastern South Dakota today, bringing the potential for downed tree limbs, isolated power outages, and difficult driving conditions along major corridors like I-29 and I-90.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. CDT for areas stretching from northwest Iowa through southeast South Dakota. The strongest gusts, potentially damaging, are expected from late morning into the evening, especially near open highways and in rural areas.
Cities impacted include Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, Yankton, and Vermillion, where unsecured objects may become airborne and high-profile vehicles could struggle on roads. Utility crews are on standby, and residents are urged to charge devices and secure outdoor furniture.
In addition to high winds, a round of strong storms moved through early Thursday with another cluster possible through the afternoon. These storms may bring hail up to 1.5 inches, isolated gusts to 60 mph, and brief heavy rain—especially along the Highway 71 corridor near Spencer, Iowa.
Conditions will calm briefly overnight before another windy day Friday, with gusts still reaching 50 mph. Stay alert to updates and use extra caution while traveling.
