Sioux Falls, S.D. – Residents across southeastern South Dakota may wake to more than just rain Monday morning, as wind gusts up to 55 mph are trailing showers moving through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, gusts between 45 and 55 mph are possible through about 7 a.m., especially in the area stretching from Burke and Chamberlain to Lake Andes. The strong winds are arriving immediately behind the rain band advancing northeast.

Drivers on I-90 and highways around Mitchell, Winner, and Lake Andes should exercise caution due to sudden crosswinds and wet road conditions. Power outages and minor tree damage are also possible in areas seeing peak gusts.

Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor items and monitor alerts as the weather system progresses. Winds are expected to taper off later this morning, but brief hazardous travel conditions may continue into the mid-morning commute.

More updates may be issued as this fast-moving system continues northeast through eastern South Dakota.
