Aberdeen, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota Tuesday morning, where freezing rain and gusty winds are expected to create slick and hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen.

The advisory runs from 6 a.m. to noon CST Tuesday, December 9, for South Dakota counties including McPherson, Brown, Marshall, Roberts, Edmunds, Day, Spink, Clark, Codington, Grant, Hamlin, and Deuel, covering cities such as Aberdeen, Watertown, Sisseton, and Milbank.

In neighboring Minnesota, a similar advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST Tuesday for Traverse and Big Stone Counties, including Wheaton and Ortonville.

Forecasters say light freezing rain could lead to up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation, especially on bridges and untreated roads, as winds gusting up to 40 mph further reduce visibility and make driving difficult.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use caution, and check 511SD.org or 511mn.org for the latest road conditions before traveling. The greatest impacts are expected during the Tuesday morning commute, with gradual improvement expected by midday as temperatures rise above freezing.
