Sioux Falls, South Dakota – A comfortable stretch of summer weather will continue across eastern South Dakota through Thursday, but residents should prepare for a rapid return to dangerous heat this weekend as temperatures climb back into the 90s and lower 100s.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, light showers will remain possible today and Thursday, primarily along the Missouri River Valley, while most of the region experiences quiet weather. High temperatures today will range from 73 to 81 degrees, followed by 77 to 82 degrees Thursday with only isolated showers expected.
Warmer air begins returning Friday as highs climb into the low 80s to lower 90s under breezy conditions. The biggest change arrives over the weekend, when afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach 93 to 104 degrees Saturday and 94 to 103 degrees Sunday, with the hottest readings expected across portions of southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa and northeastern Nebraska.
Communities including Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Yankton, Brookings, Huron and Vermillion should prepare for increasing heat stress, especially during the afternoon and early evening. Anyone working or exercising outdoors should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
The heat eases slightly Monday, with highs expected between 88 and 99 degrees, but much of the region will remain well above average. Additional heat advisories may be issued later this week if confidence continues to increase in widespread triple-digit temperatures.
