SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – With Thanksgiving travel just weeks away, South Dakota officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for the state’s long winter season. From Sioux Falls to Rapid City, motorists are being reminded that early preparation and safety planning are vital before snow, wind, and subzero cold return later this month.

According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, early November is the right time to inspect tires, check antifreeze levels, replace wiper blades, and test batteries. Officials also advise keeping a winter emergency kit in every vehicle — including a blanket, jumper cables, flashlight, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.

Motorists traveling I-90, I-29, and U.S. 83 during the Thanksgiving period should be ready for variable weather and strong winds that can reduce visibility, especially in open areas. “Our first major winter systems often arrive around the holidays,” an SDDOT spokesperson said. “Preparation before travel can keep families safe when conditions change fast.” Drivers are encouraged to keep gas tanks at least half full, pack warm clothing, and check SD511.org for road, plow, and closure information.

With Thanksgiving travel increasing statewide, SDDOT officials emphasize that readiness and caution are key for safe winter driving across South Dakota’s highways, hills, and plains.
