Sioux Falls, S.D. – Much of southeast South Dakota could see up to 4 inches of rain by Thursday as repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms sweep through the region, raising concerns over localized flooding and potential storm damage.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the heaviest rain is expected across far southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. Rainfall totals between 2 to 4 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts possible. The risk extends through late Thursday, and rainfall projections may still shift over the next 24 hours.
Cities such as Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton, and Vermillion are in the zone of heaviest rain potential. Poor drainage areas and low-lying roadways may see brief flooding, especially during heavier downpours. A few stronger storms could also develop Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with damaging winds as the primary threat.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, secure outdoor items, and keep emergency alerts enabled. Farmers and construction crews should prepare for work disruptions through midweek.
Rainfall is expected to taper off late Thursday, but additional watches or warnings may be issued depending on storm development.
