Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Scattered thunderstorms are set to move across eastern South Dakota this morning, threatening Sioux Falls and surrounding communities with pea-sized hail, lightning, and bursts of heavy rain through 7 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the most likely area for thunderstorm activity stretches from Yankton to Brookings, with showers and storms tracking northeast and expected to diminish by mid-morning. Additional rounds of thunderstorms, some possibly severe, may redevelop later this afternoon and evening.

Drivers on I-29 from Sioux City to Brookings should remain alert for brief downpours and reduced visibility, while residents in Sioux Falls, Madison, and Pipestone could encounter lightning and small hail during their morning commute. Emergency managers advise moving indoors or seeking shelter as storms pass, especially with cloud-to-ground lightning reported.

This round of storms marks another active morning for the region, echoing similar July events in recent years. After a lull midday, more thunderstorms could develop late Wednesday, prompting the possibility of further weather advisories.

Warnings remain in effect for eastern South Dakota through 7 a.m., with updates expected as new storms develop later in the day.
