South Dakota – Gray skies stretch low across the eastern plains this morning as Sioux Falls wakes to a brisk 29°F, the wind already nipping at the edges of the coming storm. It’s calm enough for now — quiet roads, steady air — but this calm will not last long.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a powerful system is expected to arrive Friday, bringing widespread snow and strong northwest winds across southeastern South Dakota and neighboring northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Gusts could reach 45 mph, reducing visibility to near zero in open areas, especially along I-29 and Highway 14.

Thanksgiving Day itself remains tranquil, with sunshine and highs near 30°F, ideal for travel and outdoor gatherings. But by Friday morning, clouds will thicken, temperatures will hover near 27°F, and snow will begin spreading eastward. Accumulations may range from 2 to 6 inches, with higher totals possible in localized bands. Blowing snow and drifting could quickly turn roadways slick, and travel conditions may deteriorate through Friday night into Saturday morning.

Saturday remains frigid and unsettled, with snow tapering and highs only in the mid-20s. Lows drop into the single digits, adding to the region’s early-winter chill.

Looking ahead, models hint at a major Arctic front sweeping the central U.S. around December 1–5, potentially reinforcing cold air and additional snow chances. For now, Thanksgiving brings peace — but travelers should brace for a sharp winter wake-up just as the holiday winds down.
