Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Lingering morning thunderstorms will give way to possible severe redevelopment Sunday afternoon across parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, with the greatest risks between 1 and 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, early storms will move east by late morning, but new development could spark by early afternoon, especially from Yankton to Windom and areas southeast. The strongest storms may bring hail up to 1 inch and wind gusts near 60 mph.
Areas under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather include Sioux Falls, Yankton, Vermillion, and Worthington. Outdoor plans should be reconsidered, and residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Travel may be impacted by heavy rain and sudden gusts.
The uncertainty stems from how quickly the atmosphere can recover after the morning storms, but if conditions align, isolated severe cells could move quickly eastward by evening. No tornadoes are expected, but brief funnel clouds or warnings cannot be ruled out.
Storm risks will taper off Sunday night, but additional updates may follow depending on afternoon development.
