Sioux Falls, S.D. – Independence Day plans across South Dakota could be disrupted by severe thunderstorms and dangerous heat, with storms capable of producing 60 mph winds and large hail expected through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, scattered storms developed early Wednesday along and east of the James River, with additional rounds possible through tonight and again on July 4th. The strongest cells are expected between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., primarily along and east of Interstate 29.
Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Brookings may see strong wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Heat index values are also climbing into the upper 90s and could reach 100 degrees in parts of the Missouri River Valley, raising concerns for heat exhaustion during outdoor holiday activities.
Storm chances return Thursday evening into Friday night, with the highest risk centered around the July 4th holiday. Emergency officials advise residents to monitor alerts and limit outdoor exposure during peak heat. Winds on Thursday could gust up to 25 mph in the afternoon, further complicating conditions for fireworks or travel.
This pattern of hot, stormy weather is expected to continue into the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
