South Dakota Weather Alert: Strong Storms, 60 MPH Winds and Quarter-Size Hail Possible Tuesday Night

Sioux Falls, SD – Strong storms are expected to return across the Sioux Falls region Tuesday evening, with damaging winds and hail creating hazardous conditions for drivers and outdoor plans through the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms will begin developing in northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and southeast South Dakota after 6 p.m., with the potential for gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. Localized downpours could lead to brief flooding in low-lying areas. Storm activity will remain scattered through early Wednesday morning.

By midweek, heat and humidity will rise sharply. Heat index values are forecast to top 100°F on both Thursday and Friday, especially in areas south of I-90. While storm chances drop temporarily by midweek, isolated thunderstorm development is possible again by late Friday into early Saturday.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 86°F. A slight chance of early morning storms.

Thursday: Sunny and hot, with highs near 88°F and heat indices over 100°F.

Friday: Mostly sunny and humid. Temperatures rise to 91°F with a 30% chance of storms overnight.

Saturday: Partly sunny, highs in the low 80s. A few lingering showers early.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and pleasant with highs near 84°F.
