Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Scorching heat and a renewed threat of strong storms are on the way for eastern South Dakota, with Thursday, July 24, shaping up to be a dangerous weather day across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, heat index values will climb as high as 105° Thursday afternoon, just hours before a cold front sweeps in with a risk of severe thunderstorms. The main threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, heavy rainfall, and pockets of small hail. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and remain weather-aware into the evening.

Storms are expected to develop after 3 p.m. and may affect travel along I-29, particularly near Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton. Wind and rain could create hazardous driving conditions during the Thursday evening commute.

While Thursday brings the most immediate threat, the five-day forecast shows this active summer pattern continuing. Friday and Saturday will remain hot and mostly sunny, with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Sunday looks even hotter with a high near 93° under clear skies.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday both bring renewed chances for thunderstorms, especially late Monday into Tuesday, as the next front moves in. Spotter activation is not expected for Thursday, but residents should monitor alerts in case that changes.

⚠️ Weather warnings remain possible through early next week. Check back for updates as summer weather threats continue.
