Deadwood, South Dakota – Snow-covered roads and reduced traction are creating travel concerns across the northern Black Hills Friday, with slippery conditions expected to persist through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota and the Wyoming Black Hills until late Friday afternoon. Additional snowfall of up to two inches is expected, enough to keep roads slick and visibility reduced at times, especially on higher terrain and shaded routes.

Communities including Deadwood, Lead, Sundance, Nemo, Rochford, Terry Peak, and Cheyenne Crossing are most likely to see ongoing impacts. Snow-covered stretches of U.S. Highway 14A, U.S. Highway 85, and local mountain roads may become hazardous during both the morning and evening commutes as temperatures remain cold enough for snow to stick.

While snowfall amounts are relatively modest, officials stress that even light accumulations can create dangerous driving conditions in the Black Hills, where curves, elevation changes, and exposed ridges amplify travel risks. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations.

The advisory is set to expire late Friday afternoon, but lingering slick spots may continue into the evening hours. Motorists are urged to check current road conditions by calling 511 before traveling, especially across higher elevations.
