Sioux Falls, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today across northern South Dakota, where a mix of snow and ice is expected to cause hazardous travel conditions through 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the advisory impacts areas along and north of Interstate 90, including Brookings, Huron, Watertown, and Madison. Snowfall totals between 1 to 3 inches are expected, with ice accumulation approaching one-tenth of an inch.
The advisory began at 6 a.m., with peak travel impacts projected between late morning and early evening. Officials warn of slippery roads, especially on untreated surfaces, and possible delays for commuters and school transportation routes.
Counties under the advisory include Beadle, Brookings, Deuel, Kingsbury, and Codington, among others. Winds may further reduce visibility, especially in open rural areas near I-29 and U.S. Highway 14.
Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and allow extra travel time. Residents should monitor updates from local emergency management and the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing throughout the day, prolonging ice hazards.
This advisory follows a stretch of mild spring weather, marking a sharp return to winter-like conditions across eastern South Dakota.
