SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dawn breaks over the prairie this morning with crisp air and a clear horizon, but a quick warm-up is on the way. After a cloudy start to the week, Sioux Falls will enjoy two bright, unseasonably mild days before a cold front slides in late this weekend, bringing a drop in temperatures and a hint of November rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Thursday will climb to near 55°F under gradual clearing skies. A stronger south wind Thursday night will usher in warmer air ahead of a short-lived ridge, boosting Friday’s highs into the mid-60s. By Saturday, sunshine holds with a mild breeze, but changes arrive as a trough pushes east Sunday, dragging cooler air and clouds back over southeastern South Dakota.
Showers could develop late Sunday night and linger into Monday, with a 30 percent chance of measurable rain mainly south of I-90. Early indications suggest no snow yet, though a few models hint at a “winter tease” possible by the middle of next week as colder air deepens over the northern Plains.
Travelers heading toward Minneapolis or Omaha this weekend should expect clear roads through Saturday but cooler, wetter conditions returning Sunday night. Residents planning outdoor work or early holiday decorating will find Thursday and Friday ideal before winds and temperatures turn brisk again.
Meanwhile, the rare G4 solar storm that dazzled much of the U.S. sky with Northern Lights Tuesday night may still cause minor GPS interference today, though impacts in South Dakota are expected to stay minimal.
