Sioux Falls, SD – The pre-dawn air bites hard this morning, temperatures near –5°F and the cold so sharp it stings exposed skin within seconds. A bitter Arctic air mass has seized eastern South Dakota, with wind chills dropping to –25°F — dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors for more than a few minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the frigid pattern will persist into Saturday. While today stays dry under partly cloudy skies, temperatures struggle to break 22°F despite light southerly winds. By Friday, clouds increase ahead of the next system, and a wintry mix or light snow could begin during the morning, continuing off and on through Saturday afternoon.

Snowfall totals near 1–2 inches are possible, mainly north and west of the city, but even light accumulations could cause slick roadways and reduced visibility. The combination of powdery snow and gusty winds will make I-29 and Highway 42 travel difficult during peak hours Saturday.

Sunday offers little reprieve — highs may barely reach 7°F, with another deep freeze Sunday night as lows plunge near –6°F. By early next week, conditions begin to moderate slightly, though subfreezing air will remain entrenched.

Five-Day Outlook (Sioux Falls Metro):

  • Friday: Chance of wintry mix, high 33°F, low 13°F.
  • Saturday: Snow likely, 1–2″ possible, high 22°F, low 6°F.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy, high 7°F, low –6°F.
  • Monday: Partly sunny, high 29°F, low 19°F.
  • Tuesday: Chance of snow, high 33°F.
