Sioux Falls, SD – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across eastern South Dakota late this afternoon and evening, with the highest threat window between 4 and 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
Isolated showers and weak thunderstorms may develop earlier in the day, but the main threat for severe weather begins mid-to-late afternoon, especially in areas east of a line from Slayton, MN, to Vermillion, SD. NWS officials say the primary hazards include hail potentially reaching the size of ping pong balls and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Cities under enhanced risk include Sioux Falls, Yankton, Brookings, and Worthington, MN. While there’s still some disagreement on the storm track and coverage, forecasters urge residents to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions.
This level of hail and wind is unusual for April and poses a significant risk to unprotected vehicles, crops, and outdoor activities. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, stay weather-aware through alerts, and avoid travel during peak storm hours when possible.
More updates will follow as storms begin to form and warnings are issued.
