Sioux Falls, SD – Scattered severe thunderstorms are forecast to impact much of South Dakota beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into early Thursday, with Sioux Falls and surrounding areas at heightened risk.
According to the US National Weather Service Sioux Falls, a Level 2 severe weather risk has been issued for eastern South Dakota. The storms are expected to develop along a cold front entering the region late Wednesday and may continue through the overnight hours. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the primary concerns.
Cities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, and Yankton lie within the enhanced storm zone. Residents in these areas should prepare for strong wind bursts capable of downing trees and power lines, as well as hail that could damage vehicles and rooftops. Additional storm development is possible after midnight, increasing the threat of overnight severe weather.
Officials urge South Dakotans to have multiple warning systems in place, especially those that provide alerts while asleep. Shelter indoors during storm activity and avoid travel unless necessary.
Historically, May storms in the region can be intense, and Wednesday’s forecasted activity follows seasonal patterns. Storm preparedness, including securing outdoor items and reviewing safety plans, is highly advised.
