Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across South Dakota and the Northern Plains should prepare for potentially severe weather Sunday afternoon and evening as thunderstorms move through the region.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage through the evening hours. Forecasters warn that a few stronger storms could produce quarter-sized hail and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of South Dakota, along with portions of Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa, under a “marginal risk” for severe thunderstorms. This means isolated severe storms are possible, though the majority of activity is expected to remain below severe levels.

Residents in Sioux Falls, Brookings, and nearby communities are advised to monitor local forecasts closely, especially if they have outdoor activities or travel planned. Sudden changes in weather conditions, including strong wind bursts and hail, could cause damage to vehicles, crops, and unsecured outdoor items.

The risk extends across much of the Northern and Central Plains, with some of the stronger activity expected late Sunday afternoon into the evening hours. The National Weather Service urges caution, noting that even marginal-level storms can still be hazardous.

Travelers along Interstates 29 and 90 may encounter reduced visibility, slick roads, and periods of heavy rain. Authorities recommend allowing extra time for travel and keeping an eye on updated advisories as the storm system progresses.

The weather system is expected to move east overnight, bringing improving conditions into Monday.
