Sioux Falls, SD – Residents in southeastern South Dakota should prepare for possible severe weather this afternoon and evening as thunderstorms redevelop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to return by mid-to-late afternoon Monday, September 22. The strongest activity is most likely between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., particularly in areas south of Interstate 90 and along and south of Highway 20.

Forecasters warn that some storms could produce large hail and damaging winds. Hail may reach up to the size of half-dollars, while wind gusts could exceed 60 mph in localized areas. While the overall tornado risk remains low, the agency cautions that residents should remain alert and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The storm system is expected to move east through the late evening hours, tapering off before midnight. Motorists traveling along I-29, I-90, and nearby highways are advised to use caution, as sudden heavy rainfall and hail could impact visibility and travel conditions.

The National Weather Service recommends keeping a severe weather safety plan ready and checking updates frequently throughout the evening.
