Sioux Falls, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across South Dakota late tonight, bringing damaging winds and large hail from central into eastern parts of the state. The greatest threat window runs from midnight until 6 a.m. Friday, putting communities such as Wessington Springs, Brookings, and Madison at risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) has been issued, meaning scattered severe storms are possible. Gusts could reach 65 mph, while hail may grow to the size of quarters. Locally heavy downpours may also cause brief flooding concerns, especially on low-lying roads and rural highways.

Residents spending the evening outdoors or traveling on Interstates 29 and 90 should make immediate plans for safe shelter. Weather officials stress the importance of having multiple ways to receive warnings overnight, including mobile alerts and NOAA weather radios, since storms are likely to peak while many people are sleeping.

The storm threat should taper off after sunrise Friday, though additional updates are possible if activity redevelops later in the day.
