Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Scattered thunderstorms are set to roll across South Dakota Friday afternoon, raising the risk of severe weather and travel disruptions through the evening. Cooler air and clearer skies will return for the weekend, but another round of storms is already on the horizon for early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms covers much of eastern and southeastern South Dakota on Friday, especially from Sioux Falls to Brookings and Yankton. Residents should expect strong winds, downpours, and lightning with storms developing after 2 p.m. and continuing through late night. Lows tonight will dip into the 60s before Friday’s storms lift highs to the upper 80s to near 90. Partial sunshine is expected before storms redevelop.

Saturday will bring relief as highs fall back into the upper 70s to mid-80s, with drier air moving in. Sunday and Monday look mostly sunny and warm, with temperatures peaking in the mid-80s to mid-90s. For those traveling along I-29 or I-90, expect the best weather this weekend. Storm chances return Monday night into Tuesday, possibly impacting commutes and outdoor plans.

To stay safe, keep weather alerts enabled, avoid outdoor activities during storms, and be prepared for changing road conditions. Another weather advisory may be issued as the next system approaches.
