Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across central South Dakota Tuesday evening, bringing hail, damaging winds, and a risk of isolated tornadoes through 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the threat level has been upgraded to a Level 3 (Enhanced Risk) for areas along the Missouri River Valley, including Chamberlain and Winner. Storms are projected to develop after 4 p.m. and move east into areas like Mitchell, Huron, and eventually Sioux Falls later tonight. The strongest storms could produce ping pong ball-sized hail, wind gusts up to 70 mph, and localized flooding.
The risk zone stretches from central South Dakota into parts of northeast Nebraska, with cities like Yankton, Gregory, and Vermillion likely to see the worst impacts. Tornado potential remains isolated but cannot be ruled out.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, charge mobile devices, and be prepared to take shelter quickly. Those traveling along I-90 or U.S. Highway 83 should monitor conditions closely as storms may move rapidly.
Warnings remain in effect through late evening. Additional advisories may be issued depending on storm evolution.
