Sioux Falls, S.D. – Campers and weekend travelers across South Dakota should stay alert as isolated severe thunderstorms and pockets of heavy rain move into the region, particularly south of I-90, from Saturday through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms today could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as 1.25 inches, especially during the late afternoon and evening. A marginal risk zone stretches across most of eastern South Dakota through Sunday, with a slight risk zone extending southward into Nebraska.

Storms may re-develop Sunday night, with localized rainfall totals approaching one inch. The risk increases again Monday into Tuesday, when stronger systems could trigger multiple storm rounds and flash flooding. Tuesday’s outlook highlights a slight risk for excessive rainfall, particularly along the South Dakota–Iowa border.

Travelers along I-90 and U.S. Highway 81 should monitor road conditions, and those camping or at outdoor events are urged to identify shelter locations and have multiple alert methods active. Storm timing and intensity remain uncertain and could shift depending on weekend developments.

Watches may be upgraded as the system evolves. Additional updates are expected Sunday morning.
