Sioux Falls, S.D. – Residents across eastern South Dakota could face damaging weather Tuesday as storms capable of producing quarter-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph develop north of Interstate 90. The greatest risk runs from mid-afternoon through mid-evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, warm and humid air ahead of a cold front will fuel storm growth, with the strongest cells likely along and north of the I-29 corridor. While tornado potential remains very low, the combination of hail and damaging winds could still bring significant impacts to communities including Brookings, Watertown, and Madison.

Drivers on I-29 and nearby highways may encounter sudden low visibility and hazardous travel conditions during passing storms. Power outages are possible if gusty winds bring down tree limbs or power lines. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and avoid travel during peak storm times.

The severe threat should taper off by late Tuesday night, though additional weather updates could be issued if storm activity lingers.
