Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Strong northwest winds are expected to ramp up across eastern South Dakota on Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions as blowing snow sharply reduces visibility during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, winds will increase through Wednesday morning, with sustained northwest winds gusting between 30 and 45 mph. Isolated gusts could approach 55 mph during the afternoon, especially across open areas of southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa.

The primary concern will be blowing and drifting snow, even where little new snowfall occurs. Fresh snowpack combined with strong winds may lead to sudden whiteout conditions on rural roads and major corridors, including Interstate 29, Interstate 90 and Highway 81. Travel could become especially difficult from Sioux Falls north toward Brookings and south toward Sioux City during peak wind hours.

High-profile vehicles may struggle in crosswinds, and loose outdoor objects could be displaced by the gusts. Visibility reductions may occur quickly, giving drivers little time to react.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution, slow down and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions. Residents should secure loose items outdoors and consider limiting travel during the windiest part of the day. Officials warn that hazardous travel conditions may persist into Wednesday evening before winds gradually ease.
