Huron, South Dakota – More than 7 inches of rain hammered communities southeast of Hitchcock overnight, prompting flash flood warnings and road closures through early Sunday. Torrential rainfall hit hardest from Hitchcock to north of Yale, submerging rural roads and leaving gravel routes impassable.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, radar estimates show rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour continued into Sunday morning, with the heaviest bands stretching from northeast of Broadland through north of Yale. Flash flood warnings remain in effect until at least 7 a.m., and officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded or damaged roads.

Several gravel and rural roads have already been washed out or severely damaged. Emergency crews warn that road conditions could worsen as saturated ground struggles to absorb runoff. If you spot flooding or road washouts, authorities urge you to report it to local officials.

Travel remains dangerous this morning, especially near Hitchcock, Yale, and Broadland. Residents should stay put, avoid unnecessary travel, and never attempt to cross water-covered roads. Keep phones charged and be prepared for possible power outages.

Flood alerts are expected to remain in place through Sunday morning, with additional advisories possible if rain persists.
